Finland-based Nordic ID's PL3000 handheld computer is a rugged, Windows CE-based device that targets indoor and outdoor commercial and industrial data capture applications. The device can be equipped with a variety of wireless communications options and data capture peripherals.

Despite its relatively large size, at 9 x 3.5 x 1.8 inches (230 x 90 x 45 mm), Nordic contends that the PL3000 can be easily operated with one hand. The 3.5-inch QVGA touchscreen display features an adjustable backlight for use both indoors and out. The 29-key keypad also offers adjustable backlighting, plus individual key lighting for guided operation.

Auto-ID options include laser scanner, linear and 2D imagers for barcodes, and RFID. Wireless options include WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPRS/EDGE cellular communications.

Technical specifications for the PL3000 include:

Processor -- Sharp 200 MHz ARM
Memory -- 64 or 128 MB SDRAM, 32 MB flash
Operating system -- Windows CE: 5.0 standard, 6.0 available
Display -- 3.5-inch QVGA TFT with touchscreen and adjustable backlight
Keypad -- 29 keys with adjustable backlight and individual key lighting
I/O ports:
- motion detector
- loudspeaker
- headset connector
Expansion slots:
- SD/MMC
- internal PCMCIA Type II
Auto-ID options:
- laser
- linear and 2D imagers support most common 1D and 2D symbologies

Weight -- 450 gm (includes battery but no options)

Surprisingly, the PL3000 does not appear to provide either Ethernet or USB expansion.

Nordic offers a software development kit (SDK) for the PL3000 that works with Embedded Visual C++ 4.0 and .NET Compact Framework.
