Sygate Technologies has introduced version 4.0 of its Security Agent for Windows XP Embedded, featuring enhanced virus protection and anti-application hijacking along with improved performance and manageability. Other enhancements are said to include a dramatically reduced, single-agent footprint, seamless integration with Microsoft's Target Designer, and the availability of a run-time version of the agent.

Virus protection has been enhanced by adding anti-application hijacking technology to the host-based Intrusion Prevention Engine and behavior-based heuristics found in previous versions of the Security Agent, Sygate says. The anti-application hijacking technology can detect and block process execution chains, according to Sygate, and can detects when a malicious application tries to execute a trusted application and use the application's trust privileges to access the network.

Additionally, Sygate says that the Windows XP Embedded version features a "dramatically reduced" memory footprint relative to the size of the standard Windows Sygate Security Agent component, while maintaining complete functional parity. Furthermore, the XP Embedded version of the Agent can operate in either an autonomous (standalone) or centrally managed mode.

Sygate says that it has fully integrated the Security Agent component with Microsoft's Target Designer so that developers can easily customize configurations specific to particular needs, including enabling/disabling pop-up messages, hiding/displaying tray icon, and setting default security rules/policy. The latest release also includes a run-time version of the Security Agent component, with a simple Windows Installer that allows deploying the agent on systems currently installed in the field without having to prepare and distribute a completely new image.

Sygate Security Agent 4.0 for Windows XP Embedded will be available later this month, the company says.
