| O2 debuts Xda IQ smartphone with push email |

 Wireless carrier O2 recently launched the Windows Mobile 5.0-based Xda IQ smartphone, its first to be supplied with Microsoft direct push technology preinstalled. The quad-band GSM handset also features both WiFi and Bluetooth wireless, a 1.3 megapixel camera, Mini SD expansion, and a Mini USB connector.

Microsoft's direct push technology, announced one year ago, uses Exchange Server 2003 SP2 to push compressed Outlook information to devices equipped with the Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) for Windows Mobile 5.0. Updates to email, calendar items, contacts, and tasks are transmitted to the devices as they arrive at a corporate system running Exchange Server. The technology also provides device security and management features, including over-the-air device password policy enforcement, remote wipe of the device in case of loss or theft, native S/MIME support, certificate-based authentication, and FIPS 140-2 certification, according to Microsoft.
Push email on mobile devices is a fast-growing market that is estimated to currently serve some 4.2 million mobile devices, with a potential user base of 40 million by 2008. Other devices with recently announced support for Microsoft's Windows Mobile direct push technology include the Motorola Q, the Palm 700w, the HP IPAQ and the Fujitsu-Siemens Loox.
Like the T-Mobile SDA, the Xda IQ is reportedly a spinoff of Taiwanese ODM (original design manufacturer) HTC's Tornado platform. Key features and specs of the Xda IQ, according to O2, include:- Processor -- 200 MHz TI OMAP 850

O2 says the Xda IQ is available at O2 retail stores in the UK and online at www.o2.co.uk. Pricing was not announced.
Users of two other O2 phones, the Xda Exec and Xda Mini S, can also activate direct push via a software upgrade from the O2 Xda website.
