Networked media client platform supports Windows CE
May 26, 2005

Oregan Networks has combined its IP media delivery software with a video streaming chipset from Sigma Designs to create an embeddable multimedia reference design that provides "PC levels of web browsing and user interface delivery on TV," along with video- and audio-on-demand functionalities, according to the companies.

The reference design is said to combine multicast IP-based television (IPTV) and video-on-demand (VOD) functionalities along with DVD playback, USB 2.0, multi-format memory card access, and digital media adapter support.

Oregan says its contribution to the joint effort is based on its TV browser and UI engine that enables advanced web browsing and graphics rendering on resource constrained TV-centric entertainment systems. The Media Browser enables IP streaming of broadband entertainment content and Internet media, such as Dynamic HTML (DHTML) and Macromedia Flash 6, directly to the device without the need for a PC as an intermediary, according to the company.

Sigma's contribution is the EM8620L high-resolution video streaming chipset featuring up to 720p resolution, and comprehensive media codec support, including MPEG -1, -2, -4, DivX, Windows Media Video 9, Windows Media Audio 9 and Audio 9 Pro, as well as current Microsoft DRM technologies, according to Sigma. The chipset is already in use in several Windows CE-based set-top boxes including devices from LG Electronics and the STB for DAVETV's point-to-point video service.

The two companies say they are currently working with several leading global manufacturers of IP set-top boxes, network DVD players, and digital media adaptors, and that they anticipate that a number of mutual customer announcements will be forthcoming over the coming months, followed by volume shipments.
