| Thin client tablet runs Windows XP Embedded |
Apr. 22, 2008
Bosanova has introduced a wireless thin client that runs Windows XP Embedded and targets healthcare, manufacturing, distribution, and retail. The rugged, dust- and water-sealed 410XP tablet has a 10.4-inch touchscreen, 802.11a/b/g WiFi, and flash storage or an optional 30GB hard drive.

Designed to roam around a shop floor, warehouse, hospital, or the like, the 410XP comes with a 2200 mAh lithium-ion battery providing up to 3.5 hours of battery life, Bosanova claims. In case the device gets dropped, it is designed to withstand multiple impacts from 2.5 feet. It is also said to meet the IP53 standard for ruggedness, along with the IPX3 and IPX5 standards for water and dust resistance, respectively.
AMD's 500MHz Geode LX800 is the chosen processor, along with 512MB of RAM. The 410XP comes with 2GB of flash storage, but this should be easily expandable, since it is installed in a Compact Flash slot. The device also offers an SD expansion slot, and it accepts an optional 1.8-inch, 30GB hard disk drive.
 The Bosanova 410XP
Although the 410XP could accept a keyboard via one of its two USB ports, its primary mission is to be carried. To that end, it comes with a 10.4-inch, 1024 x 768 touchscreen display, plus five programmable buttons and a navigation button (shown above).
In addition to USB ports, the 410XP has a serial port, 10/100 LAN port, VGA monitor output, microphone input and headphone output, and a docking connector for an optional desktop cradle. Bosanova did not detail the cradle's capabilities, but it presumably supplies power to the tablet and passes its standard interfaces on to deskbound peripherals such as monitors and input devices.
On the software side, the Windows XP Embedded build on the 410XP includes Internet Explorer 7, Office document viewers, Windows Media Player, and Adobe's Flash Player. Of course, it also has Microsoft RDP (remote desktop protocol) and Citrix ICA (independent computing architecture) clients.
