Windows Mobile 6.1 phone sports dual displays
May 01, 2008

Asus has announced a phone that runs Windows Mobile 6.1 and sports dual displays. The M930 has a two-inch portrait mode QVGA external display, and hinges open to reveal a 2.6-inch WQVGA (400x240) landscape-mode internal display and hardware QWERTY keyboard.

The M930 also boasts dual cameras, MicroSD card expansion, WiFi, and Bluetooth. The internal keyboard includes a five-way controller and calling buttons that mirror those on the outside of the phone. It measures 4.5 x 2.1 x 0.7 inches and weighs 5.6 ounces. According to Asus, the phone's 1100mAh battery provides from 150 to 200 hours of standby time, and from two to five hours of talk time.

Described by Asus as a "3.5G" device, the quad-band (GSM 900/1800/1900MHz, and UMTS 2100MHz) M930 offers High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) data mode, said to provide downloads as fast as 3.6Mbps. It uses a TI OMAP2431 processor (see block diagram, below) clocked at 450MHz, and has 64MB of RAM and 256MB of flash storage.

A non-touchscreen device, the M930 runs the standard edition of Windows Mobile. While Asus's specifications merely list "Windows Mobile 6," the phone is scheduled to receive Windows Mobile 6.1, according to a list of products released last month by Microsoft when it announced the new operating system. This would be a useful addition to the M930 since, among other improvements, version 6.1 of Windows Mobile added the ability for users of non-touchscreen devices to select, cut, copy, and paste text on non-touchscreen devices.

Features and specifications listed by Asus for the M930 include:
  • Processor -- TI OMAP2431 clocked at 450MHz
  • Memory -- 64MB of RAM and 256MB of flash storage
  • Display:
    • 2-inch 320 x 240 external display
    • 2.6-inch 400 x 240 internal display
  • Cameras:
    • 2.0 megapixel main camera

    • LAN -- 802.11b/g
    • PAN -- Bluetooth 2.0
  • Other I/O -- Not cited, but presumably including USB port and headphone jack
  • Battery type/life:
    • 1100 mAH lithium-ion battery
    • Standby time from 150 to 200 hours
    • Talk time from 2 to 3 hours (3G) or 4 to 5 hours (2G)
  • Dimensions -- 4.5 x 2.1 x 0.7 inches
  • Weight -- 5.6 ounces
Asus did not release pricing or availability information for the M930, but the device appears to be on sale now.
