Fujitsu upgrades convertible UMPC

Fujitsu has announced a new 60GB hard drive option and optional HSUPA (high speed uplink packet access) modem for its convertible UMPC. The LifeBook U810 has a pivoting 5.6-inch touchscreen, an 800MHz A110 processor, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, and an integral fingerprint sensor, according to the company.

Resembling a convertible laptop that shrunk in the wash, the U810 has a 5.6-inch touchscreen that pivots and allows use as a stylus-driven tablet. Its screen bezel houses both a fingerprint sensor, at the right, and a VGA-resolution webcam.

Meanwhile, there's a miniaturized QWERTY keyboard and a "Glide Point" pointing device. Bear in mind, the U810 measures just 6.7 x 5.3 x 1.3 inches, and weighs approximately 1.6 pounds.

Like many UMPCs, the U810 uses Intel's A110 processor, clocked at 800MHz. It also has an apparently non-expandable 1GB of DDR2 RAM, plus 40GB or 60GB hard drives. There is a 64GB SSD (solid state disk) option, and flash storage can also be added via the device's CompactFlash and SD slots.

Wireless interfaces include 802.11a/b/g and Bluetooth 2.0. New to the U810 is an optional modem that connects to AT&Ts HSUPA (high speed uplink packet access) network, which is said to provide download speeds of up to 1.4MBps and uploads of 800Kbps.

The U810 has a 10/100 Ethernet connector and a VGA output, both provided via a special LAN/VGA cable adaptor. It has two USB connectors and jacks for audio line/mic in and line out.

Including a four-cell battery, the U810 has a claimed battery life of up to 5.5 hours.

The U810 comes with Windows Vista Home Premium or Windows Vista Business operating systems. It is also available with Windows XP through June, Fujitsu said, although Microsoft has since extended XP's availability for ultra-low-cost PCs.

Available now, the U810 costs approximately $1,000, not including the optional HSUPA modem.
