Windows Mobile 6.1 phones offer video output
Apr. 02, 2008

A new smartphone manufacturer has made its debut with two new Windows Mobile 6.1-based devices. Velocity Mobile's Velocity 103 and Velocity 111 output video to VGA displays and TVs, offer WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS, and will be sold as unlocked, carrier-independent devices, the company says.

The Velocity 103 features a 2.8-inch touchscreen display with full VGA (640 x 480) resolution. The Velocity 111, on the other hand, has a 2.5-inch display with QVGA (320 x 240) resolution, but adds a QWERTY keyboard to the mix.

Other than the above details, and the slightly differing sizes that result, the Velocity 103 and Velocity 111 are identical. Interestingly, both use Qualcomm's ARM11-based MSM7201 processor. Announced in January, this is a pin-compatible replacement for the familiar MSM7200, apparently designed as a response to patent-infringement litigation by Broadcom that has restricted MSM7200 sales into the U.S. market.

Velocity Mobile did not share clock speeds, but says both devices come with 128MB of RAM and 256MB of flash. Storage may be added via MicroSD expansion slots.

The Velocity 103 and Velocity 111 offer quad-band GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900MHz) and tri-band UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (850, 1900, 2100MHz) cellular connectivity. The phones can download data at 384Kbps over UMTS, and up to 7.2Mbps over HSDPA/HSUPA, Velocity Mobile claims.

Other wireless functionality includes Qualcomm's gpsOne technology, 802.11b/g wireless networking, and Bluetooth 2.1. The devices also include two megapixel cameras, supplemented by forward-facing VGA-resolution cameras for videoconferencing.

The Velocity 103 and Velocity 111 include Mini-USB connectors and a 2.5mm jack for audio output. While promising video output to a TV or VGA display, the company did not state what type of adapter cable is required.

As mentioned, the Velocity 103 and Velocity 111 will ship with Microsoft's newly announced Windows Mobile 6.1 software, including the optional Windows Live for Windows Mobile component. Via Windows Media Player, they will be able to play audio in WAV, MP3, WMA, AMR, MIDI, AAC, and AAC+ formats, and video in WMV, AVI, MPEG4, and H.263 formats.
