DIN-rail PC runs Windows CE or XP Embedded
Apr. 28, 2008

Axiomtek has announced a compact industrial PC that runs Windows CE or XP Embedded and is designed for DIN-rail mounting. The remotely controllable ICO-200 has an AMD Geode LX800 CPU, up to 1GB of RAM, Compact Flash storage, and a Mini PCI slot, the company says.

The 35mm-wide DIN-rail format allows the ICO-200 to be mounted alongside switch and control equipment, for applications such as data-logging, automation, and SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition). Measuring 6.3 x 4.4 x 2.1 inches and weighing 2.6 pounds, the ICO-200 has internal CompactFlash and MiniPCI expansion slots that are easily accessible via the front panel, according to Axiomtek. The ICO-200's case, made of steel and aluminum, incorporates a wireless LAN antenna, though the radio itself, if desired, must be added via the Mini PCI slot.

The fanless ICO-200 is designed around Axiomtek's previously available SBC84620 SBC (single board computer). Along with MiniPCI and CompactFlash expansion, the board offers a single SODIMM socket that accepts up to 1GB of RAM. Seen at right, the SBC84620 uses AMD's 500MHz AMD Geode LX800 processor and CS5536 companion chipset.

The ICO-200's interfaces have all been brought to the front panel, for easy accessibility in a crowded equipment rack. The PC has two nine-pin serial ports (one RS232 and one RS232/422/485), a VGA port, two 10/100 Ethernet ports, two USB 2.0 ports, and a single PS/2 mouse/keyboard connector.

Axiomtek touts the ICO-200's management console, which can be accessed remotely via a web browser to monitor and diagnose the system. The console can watch for specific events and alert an operator by email or pager, according to the company. However, Axiomtek did not state whether the management console is resident in ROM on the ICO-200, or is merely supplied with the system for installation by the purchaser.

Features and specifications listed by Axiomtek for the ICO-200 include:
  • Processor -- AMD Geode LX800 clocked at 500MHz
  • Memory -- up to 1GB of RAM via single SODIMM slot
  • Display -- VGA output; resolutions not specified
  • Storage -- Compact Flash
  • Networking -- 2 x 10/100 Ethernet
  • Other I/O:
    • 1 x RS232
    • 1 x RS232/422/485
    • 2 x USB 2.0
    • 1 x VGA
  • Expansion:
    • 1 x Compact Flash
    • 1 x Mini PCI
  • Operating temperature -- 0 to 45 deg. C
  • Dimensions -- 6.3 x 4.4 x 2.1 inches
  • Weight -- 2.6 pounds
  • Power requirements -- 5VDC
The ICO-200 is designed to run Windows CE or Windows XP Embedded, but is also compatible with Windows 2000 and XP Professional. It will be available in May, says Axiomtek. Pricing was not disclosed.
