Microsoft launches Windows Mobile site for salespeople

Microsoft has launched a new website devoted to Windows Mobile, and targeting "anyone who sells mobile phones or works in the mobile industry." Windows Mobile Connection features background information on the operating system, mobile industry news, Microsoft press releases, and discussion forums, the company says.

Providing an introduction to the site, moderator Bill Fisher writes that Windows Mobile Connection is "by and for sales professionals. We've launched with a discussion forum, photo gallery, and home page news, all built and moderated by technical experts and others who work directly with the Windows Mobile team."

Despite its focus on sales, the forum-based site spends little time on sales pitches or closing deals. Instead, current forums cover topics such as:

Mobile industry news
Official Microsoft news and announcements
Suggestion box for the Windows Mobile product development and marketing teams
Comparing Windows Mobile versions
Sync and connectivity
Messaging and communication
Applications software
Hardware (mobile devices and add-ons)
FAQ and troubleshooting information
Glossary
Owner reports ("what real Windows Mobile owners are saying")

A well-organized main page, in addition to listing the forums, provides information on new postings and the most active threads. Links to other Windows Mobile-related websites and blogs maintained by Microsoft are included, too.

According to statistics provided by Microsoft's forum software, the site gained 314 users the first day, and 881 in the first three days. As of this writing, there were 426 threads and 536 posts.

Windows Mobile Connection is open to anyone, but posting comments requires having a Microsoft Live ID. Members who register and contribute regularly can earn increasing site recognition and access, starting with the ability to post comments, and moving up to the ability to moderate threads, says Microsoft.

In February, Microsoft relaunched another Windows Mobile-specific website, the Windows Mobile Developer Center.
